# Capitalization
# Our Rule
Everything in our Benevity products is written in sentence case, with a few exceptions.
# Exceptions
Use title case for:
- buttons
- page titles
- the labels of sub-items within a main navigation bar ex. Spark > Make a Donation > Explore Causes
- proper nouns, including Benevity Terms (opens new window)
Besides the exceptions above, everything else is written in sentence case.
# Why the Rule?
Sentence case is considered the most readable text for all users. Easier for skimming. Easier for translating to other languages. Easier for screen readers to read out loud (some screen readers read capitalized text letter-by-letter).
The more words capitalized, the more time people may spend trying to decipher why things are capitalized. When words are capitalized they can be seen as "important" or "special". But deciding what is important is subjective.
# Definitions
Sentence case: Capitalize the first letter of a sentence and proper nouns. A proper noun, unlike a common noun, is a specific name for a person, place, or thing. This includes the names for brands, products, and services. Think Tokyo, Wanda Maximoff, Benevity, and Skyline.
Title case: Capitalize the First Letter of Every Word in a Sentence Except the Articles (a, an, the), and Short Conjunctions (and, but, or) or Prepositions(on, in, with).
Upper case: CAPITALIZE EVERY LETTER, NO MATTER WHAT THE DOCTOR ORDERED.
